Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of slain President John F. Kennedy, is America’s newest ambassador to Japan.
The Senate confirmed her late Wednesday night, on the heels of its vote to open the government and raise the debt ceiling, CBS reported.
Ms. Kennedy won the nomination from President Obama after providing him with substantial assistance in his re-election.
During her hearing on the Senate floor last month, she vowed to continue the legacy that was started under her father. Her diplomatic duties are sizeable: Japan is America’s fourth largest source of trade and is also part of the Navy’s 7th Fleet, home to 50,000 U.S. troops.
Ms. Kennedy was about to turn 6 years old at the time of her father’s assassination on Nov. 22, 1963..
