Sen. Ted Cruz’s hometown newspaper, the Houston Chronicle, has backtracked on its support and tossed its endorsement to the wind, now entreating the de facto leader of the tea party cause — whom they cheered in November — to rein in his politics and start acting like his predecessor.
Beneath the headline, “Why We Miss Kay Bailey Hutchison,” the paper’s editorial board blasted Mr. Cruz for his role in creating the “chaotic, hyper-partisan atmosphere” in Washington, D.C.
The criticism is curious given it comes only a few months after the same sources praised the up-and-coming politico, finding him a suitable replacement for Ms. Hutchison, who left after 20 years in the Senate.
“When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November’s general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation — that he follow Hutchison’s example in his conduct as a senator,” the Houston Chronicle editorial read. “Obviously, he has not done so.”
The editors went on: “Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution.”
