An American suspected in an August car bombing in northern Sinai was found dead, hanging by his shoelaces and a belt in an Egyptian police station Sunday, CNN reported.
James Lunn, identified by a U.S. State Department official, was discovered in a waiting area of the Awal police station in Ismailia, public prosecutor Hisham Barakt said, according to the report.
His death is being ruled as a suicide.
“The duty officer in the Awal Police Station in Ismailia, while passing by the administrative detention room where the accused was being held alone, found that the accused had committed suicide by hanging himself from the bathroom door,” Egypt’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The State Department official said, “Our thoughts are with his family as they cope with their loss. We have contacted his family and are providing appropriate consular assistance.”
Lunn was taken into custody on Aug. 27 after a car bomb exploded near a police station in northern Sinai, the ministry said, according to CNN. His death came on the same day that his detention was extended another month, the ministry said.
