UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons, even if it stands alone, because Israel’s future is threatened by a “nuclear-armed’” Iran seeking its destruction.
He urged the international community to keep up sanctions, and pressure, in his address to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.
Mr. Netanyahu said the Iranian president’s latest charm offensive is a ruse to get rid of biting sanctions while it continues to work toward a nuclear weapon.
The Israeli leader said all Iranian presidents serve the same “unforgiving regime” where the supreme leader dictates. He accused Iranian President Hasan Rouhani of masterminding a strategy to advance Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
Mr. Netanyahu also accused Iran of propping up a Syrian regime that massacres and uses chemical weapons against its own people.
