Chinese authorities reported Tuesday that a mortar shell landed inside its embassy in Damascus, leaving one person with injuries and causing slight damage to the building.
“China is shocked at the attack and strongly condemns it,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said, The Associated Press reported.
The attack occurred Monday in the war-torn Syria’s capital city.
The employee who was injured was a Syrian, but the condition of the worker is not known, AP reported.
One AP reporter who saw the attack said the mortar shell also set on fire to cars in the compound.
Mr. Hong said China was urging an end to violence in Syria and a beginning to serious peace talks. The attack on China’s embassy came just a few days after mortar shells hit both Iraqi and Russian diplomatic facilities, located in the heart of Damascus.
