Boston may have chosen Mayor-elect Martin Walsh — who narrowly defeated John Connolly — in Tuesday’s race. But the third-place finisher was a more familiar name, though he’s known more for power-hitting the Red Sox through the World Series than for political aspirations.
David “Big Papi” Ortiz, the World Series MVP, topped all candidates in votes from the write-in crowd, Politico reported.
The Boston Election Department confirmed to WGBH that of the 560 write-ins, the Red Sox slugger led the pack, despite not running for the office.
The department doesn’t keep tabs on how many write-in votes each candidate receives. But even if he got them all, he would have still been roughly 72,000 votes shy of winning.
