SWAT teams and local police arrested two men who were carrying rifles and backpacks and wandering inside an empty Denver middle school Tuesday morning.
Authorities were alerted to the break-in by a worker, who dialed police a few minutes past 10 on Monday evening and said two men carrying rifles and backpacks had broken into the school, CBS said. Police shortly after put the school — the Noel Community Arts School — on lockdown and surrounded the building.
Denver police spokesman Sgt. Steve Warneke said authorities notified the community to stay inside, ABC 7 News reported. Nobody was injured in the incident, but police did call in the bomb squad to investigate. The bomb squad then sent in a robot to scour and video the hallways, ABC 7 News said.
In the early morning hours, they also sent out a helicopter to light up the roof. They communicated with the suspects over the school public address system, finally taking the two into custody shortly after 3 a.m., police said.
Their names and ages have not yet been released.
