A Canadian Muslim cleric with a radical speaking past is now counseling that women ought to obtain permission from their husbands before talking.

Maulana Syed Mohammad Zaki Baqri, based in Toronto, offers the marriage wisdom on his website, FrontPage Magazine reported. In a section titled “Marriage is a gift of God,” he writes: “She needs to have the permission of her husband for a number of things, including, leaving the home … communicating and speaking with others.”

The cleric has been offering what the Council of Islamic Guidance characterized as “aggressive and concerned” leadership to Shiites in Toronto for decades.
