The Newtown, Conn., high school football team finished an undefeated 2013 regular season late Tuesday, one day after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in their town returned to the news with the release of a report that said the 20-year-old shooter acted alone and had no clear motive.

The Nighthawks had dedicated their season to the 20 children and six adults who died in last December’s tragedy by placing the number “26” on their helmets and incorporating green, the elementary school’s color, into their blue logo, according to Buzzfeed.

They’ll go into the state tournament as a No. 1 seed, the website said, and could play in a championship game on Dec. 14 — the one-year anniversary of the massacre.

Connecticut officials released an investigative summary Monday that said the shooter, Adam Lanza, who killed his mother before storming the school, did not have any accomplices and that the investigation is closed.
