The stripper who falsely accused a group of Duke University lacrosse players of raping her was sentenced last week to a minimum of 14 years in prison for stabbing her boyfriend to death.
Crystal Mangum, 34, was charged with second-degree murder for stabbing Reginald Daye, 46, on April 3, 2011 in Durham, N.C., the New York Daily News reported. Daye died in a hospital 10 days later.
Mangum told the court that she stabbed him in self-defense.
“He straddled me, hit me, and then he started choking me,” she said. “I couldn’t breathe. My head hurt real bad.”
Mangum, a black woman, made national headlines back in 2006 when she accused three white lacrosse players of raping her while she worked as a stripper at a party. The story stoked racial tensions across the country as activists called for justice against the boys.
The accusations were later found to be false and North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper dismissed all charges filed against the students, ABC 11 reported.
