The U.S. Postal Service has put up a $100,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot to death a mailman in Maryland over the weekend.
Tyson Jerome Barnette, 26, was making the rounds of his delivery route in Upper Marlboro when he was shot on Reed Street, police said, Fox News reported. Police don’t yet gave any suspects.
A resident of the neighborhood found Mr. Barnette’s body in the street and alerted police. U.S. Postal Service spokesman George Maffet Jr. said in The Washington Post that the carrier had been on the job for six years.
Postal workers speaking to the newspaper said the department is understaffed, leading to late-night deliveries in the dark — which open the door to dangers.
“We’re going to have hundreds of letter carriers deliver mail in the dark tomorrow,” one union leader said to WWTG. “The routes are twice as big as they were five years ago, and we are understaffed. It doesn’t have to be.”
