A scofflaw of Northern Virginia’s Dulles Toll Road got a dose of reality this week when he was taken to court over $202,000 in penalties.
Jason Bourcier, of Arlington, Va., said his attorney negotiated the tab down to $40,000, but $55,000 in interest payments and other fees brought it back up to $96,498, USA Today reported.
Mr. Bourcier will be paying $150 a month until he’s 87 years old — 54 years from now.
He admits to owing $440 in missed tolls on the Dulles Toll Road, but VDOT tacks on a $25 processing fee per violation and $500 per infraction, a local Fox News affiliate reported.
Mr. Bourcier said he became a toll scofflaw in 2009, when he was struggling through the recession.
“I would go through [the EZ Pass system] late at night, and there weren’t any attendants,” he said, USA Today reported. “One day, I asked an attendant if the cameras were on when there were no attendants on duty. He said they weren’t. So I started going through without paying the tolls.”
