New York Rep. Grace Meng was attacked and robbed Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., NBC New York reported.

Mrs. Meng, 38, who represents New York’s 6th District, was walking home from dinner when she was struck in the back of the head. Her purse was stolen and the suspect ran away on foot, the station said.

She suffered a bruise on her chin and was able to return to work Wednesday.

“While this was a frightening ordeal, I fortunately was not seriously injured,” Mrs. Meng said in a statement. “Obviously, things could have been much worse. I thank the U.S. Capitol Police and the District of Columbia Police for responding quickly and professionally.”
