Ban Ki-moon, the secretary-general of the United Nations, says the international community needs to ramp up its fight against climate change or else prepare to face the “wrath” of the planet.
He made the entreaty at a U.N. conference in Warsaw, advising heads of state to step up the speed at which they’re considering the specifics of a new global climate treaty that’s due for adoption in 2015 in Paris, The Washington Post reported.
His warnings were intense.
“We do not have much time to waste,” he said, speaking of the 2015 deadline, The Washington Post reported. People the world over “face and fear the wrath of a warming planet.”
He also advised listeners to put global interests above national, while hashing out details — that include emission levels, regulatory controls and recommended repercussions — for the new international agreement.
“Plan not only for your country, but for your neighbor and your neighbor’s neighbor,” he said.
