Hazmat and law enforcement swarmed the scene of a chemical company in Carson, Calif., after sulfuric acid was spilled and 50 to 60 workers in nearby businesses complained of sudden illness.
CBS Los Angeles reported that workers at Brookville Industries said their noses and throats felt as if they were on fire — around the same time Los Angeles County fire officials were called to investigate a chemical spill, Monday evening. The chemical that was spilled is called Solvay, CBS reported.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lt. April Tardy said dozens at the chemical company and nearby businesses were treated for illness, with symptoms ranging throat aches to difficulty breathing to nausea and nonstop coughing.
Ten were transported to nearby hospitals, where their condition was reported as “fine,” Ms. Tardy said, CBS reported. Several others were treated at the scene, by officials with responding ambulances.
The cause of the spill is still under investigation.
