Tom Rogish, the head football coach at Frostburg State University who is being sued over the death of a former player, retired Tuesday morning.
The announcement came in a four-paragraph press release from the university in western Maryland.
Rogish spent the last six seasons of his 35-year career at Frostburg State, capped by a 70-14 loss to Salisbury University earlier this month.
“The entire athletic department has been very supportive of the program and I have really enjoyed my time as head coach,” Rogish said in the release.
The statement didn’t include comments from any other university official, including the president or athletics director.
In August, the family of former player Derek Sheely sued Rogish, in addition to running backs coach Jamie Schumacher, trainer Michael Sweitzer Jr., the NCAA and helmet manufacturer Schutt Sports. Sheely collapsed during preseason practice in 2011 and later died from a brain injury.

In a Washington Times story last week, multiple former players raised concerns about the coaching staff’s role in the circumstances surrounding Sheely’s death.
Rogish finished with a 14-45 record at Frostburg State.
