A spokesman for the Tawhid Brigade, a leading rebel force fighting against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s military, said on Monday the group has lost their leader.
Abdul-Qader Saleh died overnight, after succumbing to injuries from a government shelling a few days ago, spokesman Akram al-Halaby said, The Associated Press reported.
The death was the latest hit at rebel fighters who have been losing ground in recent weeks to Mr. Assad’s government force.
The rebel group appointed a new leader — Abdul-Aziz Salameh — right away, AP reported.
The Tawhid Brigade is one of the strongest and best-armed rebel groups in Syria. An estimated 10,000 fight for the group, and under Mr. Saleh’s leadership, they had actually driven into Aleppo last year and taken over large portions from the government.
