Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican and U.S. Senate hopeful, said Sunday there is “no question” President Obama lied to the nation when he said Americans who like their health care plans can keep them.
Mrs. Cheney, a daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney’s, is challenging incumbent Sen. Michael B. Enzi in next summer’s GOP primary election. Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” she cast Obamacare as a key issue in the looming contest while also pulling no punches in her criticism of the president.
“There’s no way he could not have known the truth,” she said, referencing Mr. Obama’s infamous pledge that those who like their insurance policies can keep them — a promise that has proved untrue for millions of Americans, though the administration is pushing private insurers and state insurance commissioners to restore those plans.
“I think he probably figured he had to say this to get it passed. There’s no question but that he lied. We’re all paying the price for it,” Mrs. Cheney said.
While Mr. Enzi voted against Obamacare, as did every other Republican in the Senate, Mrs. Cheney said he and others in the GOP aided the passage of the law by taking part in health care reform negotiations with the administration.
“If all Republicans … stood their ground and refused to negotiate and compromise on this, we probably wouldn’t be where we are today. Instead, you had Republicans like Sen. Enzi who gave the president running room, and they gave him cover,” Mrs. Cheney said. “They got used.”
