Founding Grateful Dead member Phil Lesh showed up in New York City’s Central Park on Saturday afternoon to play an unannounced gig for about 30 lucky passers-by as part of the Jazz and Colors festival.
The 73-year old bassist, along with Soulive’s Eric Krasno and Furthur’s Joe Russo, played for about 30 minutes and even put a jam-band spin on the Beatles classic “Get Back,” JamBands.com reported.
The trio set up on a road near the park’s Sheep Meadow at around 1 p.m. EDT and played mostly jazz-style improvisation, the website said.
News of the impromptu set quickly spread via social media, but most attendees arrived well after the session was over.
Phil Lesh and Friends wrapped up their five-night run at the Best Buy Theater in New York on Saturday night.
