Two Carnival Spirit cruise passengers disappeared off the coast of Australia, and rescue workers were combing the water for sign of their bodies, dead or alive, on Thursday.

The two were Australian citizens from New South Wales and were discovered missing Thursday morning, The Associated Press reported. Surveillance cameras showed that the couple, a 30-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, fell from the ship’s middeck Wednesday evening, when the ship was still about 65 nautical miles from the city of Forster, AP reported.

Fox News reported it’s not clear whether they purposely or accidentally fell. Their names have not yet been released.

“This is a tragic event at the moment, but we’re holding out hope we might be able to find these people alive,” said New South Wales Police Superintendent Mark Hutchings, in the AP report.

The ship was docked at Sydney’s Circular Quay at the end of a 10-day trip when the couple was reported missing, AP reported.
