Police in Israel on Wednesday took a top Muslim cleric from the Palestinian territories into custody to question him about recent violence at a Jerusalem shrine.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld wouldn’t specify to The Associated Press what questions Mufti Mohammed Hussein was being asked. But the incident involved violence at the Jerusalem holy site, the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, on Tuesday, he said. Muslim worshippers hurled rocks and chains at mosque visitors, AP reported.
The mosque is built above the Jewish Temples and stands among the area’s most biblically sensitive properties. It’s also in the middle of property that’s hotly disputed between Israelis and Palestinians.
The detaining of the Mr. Hussein is significant in that senior clerics are hardly ever taken into custody in Jerusalem, AP reported.
