Five people were killed Tuesday when the volcano they were climbing, Mount Mayon, blew and spewed forth ash and rocks.

Mount Mayon, one of 22 active volcanoes in the Philippine region, is located just more than 200 miles southeast of Manila. The eruption lasted a total of 73 seconds, CNN reported.

The casualties included four German tourists and their Filipino guide, CNN said. They were killed by falling rocks, said Joey Salceda, governor of the province where the volcano’s located, to CNN.

Seven others were hurt, he said on CNN.

Officials had warned that the volcano — considered the most volatile in the region — could spew ash and steam without warning.
