For the first time, Saudi Arabian girls who attend private schools will be able to play sports.
The decision, announced Saturday, is just one of several the kingdom has made to bolster women’s rights in the nation, which is governed by strict Islamic law. It only applies to girls in private schools, not public, Associated Press reported.
Female athletes must still abide by “decent dress” codes. Female teachers will be given oversight of the program, and will be responsible for ensuring the dress and planned activities still meet Education Ministry mandates, AP reported.
“It’s about time,” said Aziza Youssef, a professor at King Saud University. “Everything is being held back in Saudi Arabai as far as women’s rights.”
