DOVER, DEL. (AP) - Jeff Gordon felt more sore than expected after the No. 24 slammed into the front-stretch wall at Charlotte.
After he watched the replay of one of the hardest hits of his career, he understood why: There was no SAFER barrier.
Gordon went on Twitter to say the barrier should be up “everywhere” and the four-time Cup champion called on NASCAR to put the energy-absorbing soft walls all around the series tracks.
NASCAR confers with safety experts from the University of Nebraska to determine where SAFER barriers need to be installed. Gordon said he believes the added expense is the only reason NASCAR hasn’t installed the barriers.
“I certainly said something and when I get the opportunity, I’ll talk to others as well about it,” Gordon said. “As I’ve learned in the past, they’re going to look at those circumstances and make their calls based on that. Me sitting down and having a conversation with them isn’t necessarily going to change that, but it doesn’t mean it’s going to stop me from doing it.”
