Costco in Sterling, Va., erupted in chaos Wednesday, as a sheriff deputy called to investigate the strange behavior of a woman handing out pizza samples ended up shooting and killing her.
NBC said the store resumed operations on Thursday. But just hours before, shoppers were fleeing, frightened by the bizarre behavior of one of the inside vendors, now identified as 38-year-old Mhai Scott of Sterling.
Witnesses said in the NBC report said Scott began to get upset about something related to her pizza samples, and waved around a knife and scissors. The Associated Press reported that Scott worked for Club Demonstration Services, which provides services to Costco, authorities said.
Deputies responded, and the woman — with scissors and knife brandished — rushed at them, NBC reported. An officer tried a stun gun, but it didn’t work, and another deputy then shot and killed her, NBC said.
A deputy was wounded in the leg, but it’s believed the wound may have stemmed from a ricochet of the other deputy’s bullet, NBC said.
One witness who sampled Scott’s pizza described her as “very nice, very polite,” in the NBC report.
