Seven were killed Wednesday when a tractor-trailer traveling a rural roadway in upstate new York crashed into a minivan carrying eight people, police said.

The trailer came off and crossed the center line of the two-lane roadway, The Associated Press reported. It struck the minivan and tore it apart, Capt. Mark Helms of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department said, in the AP report.

“It was a bad accident,” he said, AP quoted.

Two in the tractor-trailer were not injured. But seven of the eight in the van were killed — and among the victims are children, police reported. The names and ages of the deceased have not yet been released. The one in the van who survived has been taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse; the patient’s condition is not known, AP said.

Police are still investigating the cause of the wreck.
