Leading prosecutor in the Pervez Musharraf case shot dead in Pakistan

The prosecutor leading the murder case against Pakistan’s ex-dictator, Pervez Musharraf, was killed in a hail of gunfire Friday as he drove to court.

Mr. Musharraf is accused of conspiring to kill former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Chaudhry Zulfigar Ali, the leading prosecutor for the Federal Investigation Agency, was killed after gunmen navigated motorbikes next to the car in which he was riding, and sprayed him with bullets, The U.K. Guardian reported.

The gunmen got away, The Guardian said. The dramatic scene played out on the streets of Islamabad.

Mr. Ali had just argued in court that Mr. Musharraf — currently under house arrest — shouldn’t be granted bail. He said Mr. Musharraf, then president, failed to use his authority to give Mrs. Bhutto security and was conspiring with gunmen to kill her. Mrs. Bhutto died in a gun and suicide attack in 2007, at an election event, The Guardian said.
