In what’s becoming a regular “Gun Story of the Week” feature, yet another elementary-age student has landed in hot water for carting a toy weapon onto school property.
This time, it’s a 6-year-old kindergartner, who attends Old Mill Pond Elementary School in Palmer, Mass. He carried a plastic Lego G.I. Joe gun — the size of a quarter — on to his school bus and was promptly busted by a fellow student, who alerted the driver, WGGB-TV reported.
The 6-year-old was given detention and forced to apologize to the bus driver, The Daily Caller reported. He may be tossed from the bus, too, depending on how school administrators pursue the incident.
“I think they overreacted, totally. I totally do,” said mother Mieke Crane, in the WGGB report. “I could see if it was, you know, an Airsoft gun or some sort of pistol or live bullets or something, but this is just a toy. At 6 years old, I don’t really think he understood the zero-tolerance policy and related it to this as the same.”
School officials mailed letters home to parents alerting them of the incident and explaining the policy, The Daily Caller said.
