New York City’s bike sharing program, a pet project of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is barely a day old and already finds itself with a handful of issues — and one bike short.

Police said someone has stolen one of the bicycles, according to United Press International.

The Citi Bike program, which began Monday, allows riders to borrow a bike from public stocks in racks throughout the city. Police said a rider took one of the bikes Sunday as they were being delivered and distributed around the city.

Meanwhile, other problems were reported with the program Monday. Hundreds of pre-ordered membership key cards failed to reach their intended recipients on time, UPI reported.

Dani Simons, the marketing director for the bike share program, blamed the U.S. Postal Service.

“Out of 11,000 [keys], a few hundred got lost,” she said.

Mr. Bloomberg has touted the program as a means of promoting fitness while decreasing motor traffic.
