At least 21 Malaysians aboard an overloaded ferry that crashed into rocks while navigating a remote river near Borneo Island on Tuesday have gone missing, authorities say.
The ferry capsized and sent passengers into the water. Some survivors were able to reach shore, but at least 21 have gone missing, various media reported.
The ferry had a passenger capacity of 74. But Bakar Sibau, a police chief for the Sarawak state in Malaysia, said it was likely more were aboard, The Associated Press reported.
Police divers on Tuesday were still searching the water for the missing, AP said.
“We hope they will be OK,” the police chief said in the AP report.
The ferry was filled with passengers who were heading to their home villages for a harvest festival holiday, AP reported.
