CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - Kurt Busch had mixed emotions as he entered the press room around midnight Sunday after the five-hour Coca-Cola 600.
On one hand, Busch was upset that a battery wire came loose late in the race, preventing his car from starting after a crash brought about a red flag. Busch was leading at the time. On the other hand, he was pleased that his team was able to quickly resolve the problem and he wound up coming back to finish third.
Busch was clearly a little miffed after the race, but joked that he was going to try to say the right thing to reporters because “I’m always judged on my words.”
“Well, it was a good 550 miles it seemed like for us, then the normal something-has-to-pop-up, some adversity we have to overcome came about,” Busch said.
Still, it was the best finish of the year for Busch and his third top five of the season.
That’s notable because it matches the entire number of top-five finishes for Furniture Row Racing before he joined the team.
“Yeah, a top-five finish is great,” Busch said. “To be up front, to lead laps, that’s what it’s all about. So we’ll get these little hiccups polished up and continue plugging forward. That’s the only thing we can do, is learn from what exactly happened. Was it a cable issue, a battery that was dead? Was the alternator not charging?”
