CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR chairman Brian France says he believes the Air Titan drying system is great for the sport.
That doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.
France said Air Titan, which uses compressed air to move water off the track and then dry the surface, is available to all tracks. But he said not all tracks are taking advantage of the system due to the “cost issue.”
Charlotte Motor Speedway, which hosts the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, is among the tracks that isn’t using the Air Titan system.
France thinks more track owners will make use of it now that they’ve seen it work so well at Talladega Superspeedway. The Air Titan system was able to help dry the track in 61 minutes, a process that usually takes nearly 2 1/2 hours.
“In fairness to different tracks, they hadn’t seen that work in a real live condition,” France said. “Now they have. My hope is that we will get the cost down, number one, and that every track that is in risk of having rain will be using the system. But that’s why. It just takes the industry a little time to realize that it really works, all of us to get together and implement it.”
France said of the Air Titan system is “very surprising. It’s very good.”
