Eighty security guards were stationed around an exclusive French Riviera hotel that stored a $2.6 million necklace — but apparently, that wasn’t enough. Thieves were still able to make off with the piece, pulling off the second million-dollar heist at Cannes Film Festival in a week.
The necklace was stolen earlier this week, as festival attendees partied at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. In addition to 80 guards, there were several police officers, The New York Post reported.
The hotel is a highly exclusive facility known as a major draw for movie stars and other wealthy elite.
De Grisogono jewelry house, which values the necklace at $2.6 million minimum, called the theft surprising — the “first time it has happened in our 20-year history,” The Post reported.
Just last week, thieves stole an estimated $1 million in jewels from a safe mounted in the wall at a Cannes hotel room.
