Stockholm is in chaos, as hundreds of youths on Friday set fire to nearly a dozen cars, two schools and a police station as violent protests in Sweden’s capital city enter their fifth day.
Between 300 and 500 in the crowd of protesters circled around the blazing cars, United Press International reported, as nearby youths started to vandalize other vehicles. Some entered the subway station and began wreaking havoc on trains, breaking windows and vandalizing property. Others threatened subway workers, UPI said.
Down the road, in the region of Tensta, protesters firebombed a school building. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before much damage was done — but soon after, they were called to respond to another firebombing at a nearby kindergarten school, UPI reported.
At least eight have been arrested, but few injuries have been reported, UPI said.
The violence, which started Sunday, has spread to more than 15 suburbs. Protesters are upset with a police shooting of a 69-year-old man who was killed after he flashed a machete in public, UPI reported.
