Pope Francis, in a blistering attack on capitalism, said followers of the faith ought to bolster their charitable outreach and dampen their materialist pursuits. He made his comments while visiting a food kitchen on Tuesday.

“A savage capitalism has taught the logic of profit at any cost, of giving in order to get, of exploitation without thinking of people … and we see the results in the crisis we are experiencing,” the pope said, Newsmax reported.

The pontiff also decried the “dictatorship of the economy” as well as the “cult of money,” Newsmax said.

The food kitchen was located just outside the walls of the Vatican, and Pope Francis didn’t turn a blind eye to the church’s wealth while remarking on the dangers of capitalism, either.

He said the Catholic Church and its 1.2 billion members should defend the poor and learn to live with less. The pope has walked the talk. Since taking office in March, he’s abstained from wearing traditional clothing that is too flashy and ornate, and has also taken up residence in a guest house, rather than the Apostolic Palace, Newsmax reported.
