A mentally ill, knife-wielding man went on a rampage at an elementary school in southern China, stabbing six children and one adult.

A government spokeswoman said on Wednesday that all seven are now in stable condition, The Associated Press reported.

The suspect has been taken into custody, the spokeswoman said.

The knife attack occurred on Tuesday, as the students were leaving school, located in the city of Maoming, AP said.

Police said the suspect is a 32-year-old mental health patient names Liao.

School children in China have been targeted for attacks with increasing frequency in recent years, AP said. Frequently, the suspects in those cases have been found to be mentally ill — highlighting the need for China to bolster its treatment program and screening process, critics say.
