Cuba has lifted an import ban on air conditioners and other energy-sucking appliances, and now residents can bring up to two appliances per person into the country.
Since 2005, the country has prohibited individuals from bringing into the country air conditioners, refrigerators and microwaves, due to widespread energy shortages and power outages, The Associated Press reported. Now, Cuba citizens can carry into the country — for personal, not commercial, use — up to two heavy appliances per person.
The country has a new list of approved appliances: Air conditioners with capacities of less than 1 tone, ovens that use less than 1,500 watts and microwaves with less than 2,000 watts, AP said.
Also on the approved list are water heaters, toasters and irons.
The new rules went into effect on Monday, AP reported.
