CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte Motor Speedway is honoring the memory of Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt, who made history by sweeping the Sprint All-Star race and the Coca-Cola 600 here 20 years ago.
CMS is offering fans a limited edition LiftMaster Pole Night commemorative ticket for $20. The ticket features photos of Earnhardt with his trophies from those wins.
Earnhardt’s All-Star win in 1993 was the third of his career and his former assistant engine builder Danny Lawrence remembers it well.
“It sent chills through your bones,” Lawrence said. “It sounded like an earthquake the way people were roaring.”
Earnhardt had problems controlling his car in the first two segments of that 1993 All-Star race and then jumped the re-start in the final 10-lap segment prompting NASCAR to throw the yellow flag. After the field was re-set, Earnhardt passed Mark Martin on the second-to-last lap and held on for the victory.
Earnhardt then came from a lap down to win the Coca-Cola 600.
“He was so cool under pressure,” Lawrence said. “He always thought if the race was still running he still had a chance of winning it. He never overdrove it; never got in trouble. That’s why he was the best.”
