An American sailor was killed while trying to save a woman who was being mugged in the Bahamas.
Kyle Bruner’s ship was docked Nassau. On Sunday, he saw a woman being mugged by three men and tried to help her, the Bahamas Press reported. The men turned, shot him and fled.
Mr. Bruner, who had roots in Chicago and in Indiana, also served in Indiana’s Army National Guard at one point, the Bahamas Press reported.
He was working aboard a tall ship, a type of sailboat, as a private sailor, fulfilling a dream to sail on all types of ships, the Bahamas Press said.
“He never liked bullies,” his father, Rick Bruner, said to WGN News, explaining how his son’s attempt to save the woman was “very much in his character. … He never stood for people around him being bullied. So, this is what he would do. In retrospect, you say maybe he should have avoided the situation, but that’s not really who he was or the person that we loved.”
Investigators have apprehended one suspect. Two others are still at large, the Bahamas Press reported.
