U.S. workers at the Consulate General in China opened an envelope containing a mystery substance on Monday.
Investigators are still trying to determine what the substance is, The Associated Press reported.
The envelope was mailed to the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou, a city to the south of the country. Deputy spokesman Justin Higgins at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing said nobody was injured, but that workers have been told to stay on alert and take precautions, AP reported.
He declined to give further details about the substance.
The Guangzhou Yangcheng Evening News website described the substance as a powder and that some had fallen onto workers’ clothing, AP reported.
The envelope was opened in an office where visa interviews are usually held. On Tuesday, all interviews were canceled while the investigation continued, AP said.
