James Holmes, the Colorado suspect charged with multiple counts of murder, is expected to change his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity on Monday.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Mr. Holmes, who is accused of having gone on a shooting rampage in July at a midnight showing of a new Batman movie. Then, 12 were killed and another 70 injured.
The plea will make it more difficult for prosecutors to win the case, because they’ll have to prove Mr. Holmes was sane during the incident, the Associated Press reported.
But Mr. Holmes will now have to have a mental evaluation that state doctors will oversee — and prosecutors will then be able to use those results during the trial, AP said.
