Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, said in a town-hall discussion earlier this week that he still opposes gay marriage but that he’s softened on the right of same-sex partners to adopt.
He now supports the right of gay couples to adopt, Roll Call reported.
“Adoption, I’d vote differently these days,” he said, as Roll Call reported. “I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple, I think if a person wants to love and raise a child they ought to be able to do that. Period.”
He still opposes gay marriage.
“I do believe marriage is between a man and a woman, we just respectfully disagree on that issue,” he said in the Roll Call report.
Mr. Ryan also said he’s “always supported things like civil unions, where you ought to be granted certain legal privileges to be able to have benefits,” Roll Call reported.
But The Advocate found otherwise. In 2006, the gay rights magazine found, Mr. Ryan “supported the ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions approved by Wisconsin voters in 2006.”
