Ban on pornography set for EU parliamentary vote

Members of the European Parliament will vote next week whether to ban the display of any images that seem to demean women, especially pornography.

The “ban of all forms of pornography” extends to the Internet, The Telegraph reports. It’s aimed at “eliminate[ing] gender stereotypes in the EU,” MEPs say, and comes as a nod to International Women’s Day, March 8.

The text of the proposal “calls on the EU and its member states to take concrete action on discrimination against women in advertising … [with] a ban on all forms of pornography in the media,” The Telegraph reports.

The vote is largely ceremonial, rather than legally binding. But it is seen as an EU attempt to exert more political authority over member states.
