Reports from Syrian media indicate opposition fighters have killed 115 policemen and injured 50 in a fight at the police academy in Aleppo.
The reports are coming from a Syrian newspaper with a pro-government slant, The Associated Press reports. That newspaper characterizes the incident as “terrorists commit[ing] a massacre” at the police academy. But a British-based human rights group confirmed the battle did take place and said rebels now control the complex.
They stormed it using captured tanks and suffered rebel losses of roughly 80, AP reported, citing the British watchdog agency.
Opposition forces have been battling to oust President Bashar Assad since March 2011. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry just announced an award of $60 million in cash to the rebel fighters to help with security needs. The U.S. will also supply the rebel fighters with non-lethal aid, Mr. Kerry said, last week.
