The administrator at a New York Catholic High School for boys has been forced to defend to parents his decision to let a gay couple attend the junior prom.
The male couple “will be welcomed” at the dance, said Father Edward Salmon, in a letter to parents published in part by Raw Story. But that doesn’t mean their homosexuality is condoned.
A local news site published the letter in full. Father Salmon said his decision stemmed from pressure from a student-driven campaign in support of the boys’ attendance.
“I have made the decision that, if our two brothers who have asked to attend the Junior Ball together wish to do so, they will be welcomed,” he wrote.
He also requested those of faith “confront their own fears about homosexuality and to curb the humor and discrimination that offend homosexual persons. We understand that having a homosexual orientation brings with it enough anxiety, pain and issues related to self-acceptance without society bringing additional prejudicial treatment.”
