A community in California is setting up a hotline to field consumer questions about President Obama’s health care overhaul, at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars to taxpayers.

Yuba County is building the call center now, according to a CBS affiliate in Sacramento. The goal is to help businesses and individual callers sift through the mountains of documents and paperwork associated with new health care mandates, and decipher how to implement — or abide by — the reforms.

The cost to build the taxpayer-funded center is $150,000 to start, said call center director Suzanne Nobles. But the cost may increase — 21 workers are being initially hired to field the calls — and the funding has yet to be secured.

“We’re excited and scared at the same time,” Ms. Nobles said.
