Sen. Lisa Murkowski may be the next Republican to embrace same-sex marriage. She said Wednesday her views are “evolving.”

In a speech to the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce, she said: “The term ’evolving view’ has been perhaps overused, but I think it is an appropriate term for me to use,” The Hill reports. “I think it’s important to acknowledge that there is a change afoot in this country in terms of how marriage is viewed.”

As The Hill reports, that’s how President Obama termed his views of same-sex marriage — as evolving — before he announced full support for gay marriage last May. If Ms. Murkowski does embrace gay marriage, she’ll join a Senate band that includes Republican Sen. Rob Portman — who dropped his opposition to gay marriage after one of his sons admitted his homosexuality — and a handful of Democrats. Recently announcing support for gay marriage on the Democratic side of the senate: Virginia’s Mark Warner, Missouri’s Claire McCaskill and Alaska’s Mark Begich.

Ms. Murkowski did vote in the past for measures that specified marriage as between a man and woman, The Hill reports.

“It may be that Alaska will come to revisit its position on gay marriage, and as a policymaker I am certainly reviewing that very closely,” Ms. Murkowski said, in The Hill.
