An amendment to Virginia’s health care legislation pushed by Gov. Bob McDonnell would prohibit insurers that participate in “Obamacare” exchanges from providing abortion services in most instances.
The Associated Press reports that Mr. McDonnell attached an amendment to the health care package that passed earlier this year that makes it unlawful for insurance companies that participate in the Obamacare health exchange program from providing the service, even as an optional rider, AP says.
Absent 51 votes in the Republican-dominated House of Delegates and 21 in the Senate — all voting against it — the amendment will become law, AP says.
The amendment still would allow for abortions in cases of rape, incest or when necessary to save the life of the woman, AP says.
