The highest court in Italy has overturned Amanda Knox’s acquittal, and she now faces a new trial in the murder of her former British roommate.
The Court of Cassation also decided Tuesday that Ms. Knox’s former boyfriend must face a Florence appeals court again to defend murder charges in the death of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, The Associated Press reports.
CNN says Ms. Knox wasn’t present for the ruling. She has been living in the United States since 2011, after spending four years behind bars in Italy. Prosecutors never let go the case, despite the appeals court ruling that she and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito weren’t responsible for Ms. Kercher’s death. Another party, Rudy Guede, was convicted on murder charges, too, and is currently serving 16 years, AP reports.
Ms. Kercher’s body was discovered, throat slashed, in November 2007 in her bedroom at her Perugia home. She shared the house with Ms. Knox and others. Prosecutors described her murder as stemming from a sex game and drugs.
Ms. Knox could be ordered to return to Italy, CNN reports.
“We are still convinced that they are the co-authors of Meredith’s homicide,” Perugia prosecutor Giovanni Galati said in a CNN report.
