Libyan officials have confirmed that the late dictator Moammar Gadhafi’s wife and three of his children have gone missing from their Algerian home, where they had taken refuge.
The Guardian reports that Safia Gadhafi, the dictator’s second wife; their daughter Aisha; and two of their sons, Hannibal and Muhammad, fled the house, located in the coastal community of Staoueli. The family had lived there since 2011, when they sought a safe haven from Libya.
Political spokespeople say it’s possible they have joined with former Gadhafi fighters in Mali, The Guardian reports. Meanwhile, officials in Oman and Venezuela have offered the family asylum on previous occasions.
Aisha and Hannibal Gadhafi were placed on an Interpol list that’s circulated among member states, calling for their immediate arrest.
The family’s most prominent son, Saif al-Islam, is still being held by authorities in a Libyan town, The Guardian says.
